About Interbellica

An Englishman’s musings between the wars.

William Orpen, The Signing of Peace in the Hall of Mirrors, Versailles, 28th June 1919, detail. Imperial War Museum.

Interbellica is a journal of European power and politics from the French Revolution to 1945, centred on the twenty uneasy years between the wars: how a peace meant to end all wars was negotiated, managed and finally lost.

This is the written side of the project. Writing allows things a screen can’t: the long quotation, the footnote, the argument that needs a full page to unfold, the detail too small for a map but too telling to leave out. Here the pace is set by the reader rather than the narrator, and the sources sit on the page beside the conclusions they support.

What you’ll find here

  • Essays. Long-form pieces on the governments, alliances and personalities of the period, with fuller sources and the material that didn’t make the cut.

  • Arguments. My own reading of contested figures and decisions, set out with the evidence so you can disagree with me properly.

  • Notes from the reading desk. Documents, books and historians worth your time.

  • Occasional pieces on how the work is made, maps included.
